In early 1981, Minor Threat made their first trip to the studio, recording all the songs they had written during their brief time together. However, they were reportedly dissatisfied with their performance and never completed a final mix of the tape. Instead, they returned to the studio a month later to record what would become their debut, the eight-song self-titled 7" EP (Dischord #3). The original demo tape was discovered when Dischord began work on the Twenty Years of Dischord box set. In December 2001, Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara mixed the tape, but the release was shelved while the box set was being prepared. Although rough mixes of this first demo have circulated on bootlegs over the years, this marks the first time the master tapes have been made available to the public.
