PIEBALD ´We Are The Only Friends We Have´ Vinyl LP
PIEBALD ´We Are The Only Friends We Have´ LP
Iodine Recordings
Now available on vinyl for the first time in over 20 years, Piebald’s We Are The Only Friends We Have has cemented its status as one of the most iconic emo albums of its time. Completely remastered for vinyl by Jack Shirley (Joyce Manor, Quicksand) and featuring reconstructed artwork created from negatives of the original photo shoot, this reissue includes a retrospective essay written by the band. Originally produced by Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr), the album sounds as fresh as ever.
If you look up the word piebald in the dictionary, you’d find it means “having irregular patches of two colors, typically black and white.” But to their devoted fans, “Piebald” is synonymous with one of their all-time favorite bands—a genre-defying, energetic four-piece known for raw, candid lyrics, infectious hooks, and an unwavering DIY ethos. And this year, Piebald celebrates their 30th anniversary!
Formed in Andover, Massachusetts, in 1994 by Travis Shettel (vocals/guitar/keys) and Aaron Stuart (guitar/vocals), Piebald completed their lineup with Jon Sullivan (drums) and Andrew Bonner (bass). Emerging from the Merrimack Valley scene that also birthed Cave-In and Converge, Piebald became a cornerstone of the indie and post-hardcore movement of the time.
On February 19, 2002, Piebald released their critically acclaimed third album, We Are The Only Friends We Have. By this point, with Luke Garro on drums, the band was entering the most exciting chapter of their career. National radio play of singles like “American Hearts” and “Just a Simple Plan,” along with tours with Minus the Bear, Glassjaw, Saves the Day, and New Found Glory, propelled them to broader recognition and built a devoted fanbase.
Dubbed “one of the most dependably fun bands of the late '90s/early '00s emo touring circuit” and the “kings of sing-alongs,” Piebald’s unique mix of autobiographical, sociopolitical, and sarcastic lyrics captured hearts everywhere.
Though they disbanded in 2008, Piebald reunited in 2016, sparking new life into their storied career. Since then, they’ve toured with Dashboard Confessional, The Movielife, and Weakened Friends, and performed at festivals like Boston Calling, Riot Fest, and Furnace Fest.
Now, through a partnership with Iodine Recordings, Piebald is remastering and re-releasing their long out-of-print catalog, with whispers of new music on the horizon. Their legacy continues to inspire a new generation of fans and musicians. Here’s to 30 years of Piebald!
